in which John & Constance meet Chuck Eppinger
and Courtney Barr while traveling through Colorado...

the home that Chuck and Courtney built

I'd been in contact with Chuck Eppinger for about two years before we finally met face to face.

He graciously invited Constance and I to stay with him and Courtney in their comfortable home outside Durango, Colorado.

Paul Eppinger

Paul Eppinger, Chuck's son. He was the model for the character of Jeffrey in Daniel Quinn's MY ISHMAEL.

I never knew Paul; unfortunately he died before we met.

On the other hand, reading RESTLESS MIND, QUIET THOUGHTS---in which Chuck shares Paul's journal entries and letters---I feel maybe I do know Paul.

As Krishnamurti said, "It is no measure of health to be sane in an insane society."

wood sculpture created by Paul

This sculpture of a woman was designed by Paul in Styrofoam. Chuck found the mock-up in Paul's home after his death and completed the piece in wood.

Paul's art occupies a place of honor in Chuck's study, where Constance and I slept during our visit. I found myself staring at this piece quite often...

I've never been in a more comfortable home nor spent time with more gracious hosts.
