Here are just some of the books we highly
recommend. It's a very eclectic mix, and we like them all for a wide variety of reasons.
Unlike the Books Our Friends Wrote, which is a
permanent listing, this list is ever in flux. It can change or grow as we read new books
ourselves, so check back often!
Scroll down. When you see a title that
appeals to you, click on the cover for more information and/or to purchase the book.
We offer you these books in association
with Amazon.com. Please note that you'll actually be buying the books from them, and your
purchase of these books from Amazon.com through our website helps us
significantly.

Every
once in a while, you come across something that's so significant and so
meaningful that all you can do is just sit back and say, "Wow."
Whether it's a movie, a play, or a new story or book, every once in a while
something enters your life and from that point forward, you're never quite
the same again.
Before I was a third of the way through this small book, I was sitting back
and saying, "Wow." And I've not been the same since. Before I was
a third of the way through this small book, I knew that it had already made
my short list of "the best I've ever read." It's real, it's
honest, and it's on target. It's the story of Anthony
Godby Johnson, a young man who lived a brutal childhood, tortured and
abused, and who still managed to believe in the beauty of life. Anthony is
more than a gifted person, he's a great writer and someone so incredibly
full of love that he inspires everyone.
This is not one to be passed up. Trust me.

Well, we just now finished
watching Jack Lemmon and Hank Azaria in TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE on ABC, and it
only served to remind me how powerful this book was when I read it. Yeah,
it's been out for a while and yeah, you've heard about it, but if you
haven't read it, well, you're missing out on an important lesson. I've
recommended this book to family, friends, and even strangers, given copies
away, because this is one of the most important books ever written.

Perhaps Peter McWilliams' finest book...an exploration into the absurdity of
consensual crimes -- those crimes in which there are no victims. With his
usual wit, style, and thoroughness, Peter reveals the inanities of our legal
system and cultural attitudes, and makes you wonder why we put up with it
all.

Bokuyo Takeda once
said, "Correct handling of flowers refines the personality." What he seems to be
talking about, of course, is mastery.
And what is mastery, really? Is it something that only a select few can achieve? I don't
think so, because it seems like everyone I've ever met has mastered something, even
if it wasn't something very helpful. Just as I've seen people who have brilliantly
mastered difficult arts, I've also seen people who have brilliantly mastered the art of
being unhappy. So, as you can see, what we master makes as big a difference (if not
bigger) than whether we master anything at all.
"Correct handling of flowers refines the personality." What flowers do you
handle? What do you seek to master?

You wouldn't believe how
detailed and intricate this book is as Murchie investigates life in all its forms,
pointing out the most amazing things about it. From the omnipresence of life
straight to divinity, It's an exploration into the miraculous
diversity of our world that leads into a journey into our own spirit. You've never read a book
quite like this, and you never will again.

This is one of
those books that changed my life.

In my opinion (John), this is a mind-changer on the
level of Quinn's ISHMAEL. The author says, "What I found by turning my back on our
society-generated mythology was so profound that I had to share it - presumptuous or not -
because it indicts the social structures of mankind and demands social disobedience, or
living according to our inner, heroic nature and not according to the intimidation and
demands of society's ideology." That's all I needed to hear; I read the book and
loved it.

The classic text on out-of-the-box thinking. Filled
with ideas and exercises designed to enhance and expand your creativity. If I had a child,
I'd ask him or her to read this book ASAP! A perfect gift for adults with clogged
creativity, too...

Interested in
what animals feel? Interested in why scientific disciplines not only refuse
to recognize but angrily resist acknowledging the emotional lives of
animals? Curious about bears who watch sunsets and buffalo who ice skate for
the fun of it? What about gorillas who fall in love and chimpanzees who die
of grief? Or...When
Elephants Weep?

He calls it the "conserver lifestyle." Does it sound
impossible? The author has been doing it for years, and offers
real advice on how we can do it too. Even if you still need or
want a job, you can follow his example and reduce your expenses
and/or the time you spend working. Plus, think of how nice you're
being to the planet when you consume less!

Nobel Prize winning physicist Feynman had more
common sense in his little finger than most people have in their entire family. Bongo
player, actor, scientist, with an infectuous child-like curiosity, Feynman shows why
learning is so much fun...and why it's not only OK but imperative to think differently.

A young Indian boy tells of being raised by loving
grandparents in the Depression-era South. Beautifully written from the boy's viewpoint,
filled with wonderful insights. A model for child-adult relationships, and how to live in
and with Nature.

Andy's first best-seller, updated for
the 90's. Long before his fame as a proponent of natural healing, Weil devoted his career
to the study of psychotropic chemicals. This is an HONEST examination of how human beings
use mind-altering substances.

More than just a novel,
Kingsolver's gifted talent for writing brings out the injustice done by those whose plans
are the largest. Nathan Price, a fervent Baptist, takes his family to the Congo on a
mission to convert those who have not found the way to God. The story is told alternately
from the viewpoints of the mother and their four daughters as they experience the changes,
failures, and distresses of trying to retain their lifestyle in a place where it could no
longer possibly apply. Price, though, is only the minor metaphor for a larger scheme of
subjugation and ruin of an entire culture by those who would profit and prosper at their
expense. With wonderful turns of phrase and great insight, Kingsolver takes us into the
heart of Africa, and into the hearts of our own culture as well. By taking from others,
what have we given up of ourselves? There is no clear answer, but there is the experience,
which Kingsolver renders wonderfully.

The famed doctor/author describes some of the
journeys he's taken to places mysterious and beautiful. A prime example of how the
external journey opens you up for the internal journey.

Just what the title says---an actual method to
achieve financial independence which DOES NOT require you to get rich! Co-author Joe is
dead now but he did what the book promises and lived many years a financially independent
man. Thousands of others who have read this book have done the same. Out of 3 million
titles offered by Amazon, this one ranks about number 600 and garners high praise from
readers.

A groundbreaking book on the
phenomenon called "flow." Flow occurs when you are engaged in an activity where
everything seems to be happening effortlessly, time seems to lose its meaning, and things
feel "right." Athletes speak of being "in the zone" and musicians talk
of being "in the groove." This book shows how people achieve a flow state in
work, with their hobbies, and in ordinary life.
|
|

Based on and inspired by the book FLOW, and with an enthusiastic preface by Csikszentmihalyi, WRITING IN FLOW discusses flow
principles as they specifically apply to the art of writing. Susan interviewed many
well-known authors, and they share their methods of achieving a flow state while writing.
Do you like to write but feel clogged up? Maybe you need to figure out how to flow...
